Amplification of c-erbB-2 Oncogene in Human Gastric Cancer

Abstract
The amplification of cerbB-2 gene in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of 67 patients with gastric cancer was examined by differential polymerase chain reaction to clarify the role of this gene in the adenocarcinoma of the stomach.
The amplification of c-erbB-2 oncogene was detected in 20 cases (29.9%).
Although the incidence of amplification of c-erbB-2 gene was higher in the patients with lymph node metastasis (35.7%) than that of the patients without lymph node metastasis (20.0%), this difference was not statistically significant.
No significant association was shown between amplification of c-erbB-2 and the gross tumor type, tumor size, degree of differentiation, and stage of cancer.
The amplified cases showed a trend toward better five year survival (57.9% vs 55.3%), but this did not reach statistical significance.
These results showed that the amplification of c-erbB-2 can not be used as a prognostic indicator in gastric cancer.
